How the Shopify Fee Calculator works

Enter your selling price, pick your Shopify plan, and enter your shipping and product cost. The calculator applies your plan's Shopify Payments processing rate plus the flat $0.30 per-order fee to show your true net payout, net profit, and margin — switch the plan dropdown to see exactly how much a tier change would change your per-order take, before committing to a higher subscription.

Who this is for

For Shopify store owners choosing a plan tier or auditing an existing order to see how much of each sale actually reaches their pocket after Shopify Payments processing fees. It's also for merchants deciding whether a plan upgrade is worth the higher monthly subscription: Shopify's processing rate drops from 2.9% on Basic to 2.15% on Plus, a 0.75-percentage-point spread that only pays for itself once your sales volume is high enough to offset the jump in monthly subscription cost — this calculator makes that break-even math concrete instead of leaving it as a vague 'upgrade when you grow' recommendation.

Worked example

You sell an item for $40 on the Basic plan, paying $5 to ship it and $12 to source it. Processing fee: 2.9% × $40 + $0.30 = $1.46. Net payout from Shopify = $40 − $1.46 = $38.54. Net profit = $38.54 − $5 − $12 = $21.54, a margin of about 53.9%. Run the same $40 sale on the Plus plan instead (2.15% + $0.30): processing fee drops to 2.15% × $40 + $0.30 = $1.16, saving $0.30 per order. That's a small difference on one sale, but at 1,000 orders a month it's $300 — worth weighing against the difference between Basic's and Plus's monthly subscription cost before assuming a higher tier automatically pays for itself at your current volume.

How Shopify fees are actually calculated

Shopify's fee structure is unusually clean when you use Shopify Payments: there's no separate transaction-fee line the way there is on Etsy or eBay, just a processing fee that scales down as your subscription tier goes up — 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow, 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced, and 2.15% + $0.30 on Plus, with the flat $0.30 per-order component identical across every tier. That processing-rate discount is the main financial argument for upgrading plans beyond the extra features — it only pays for itself once your monthly sales volume is high enough that the percentage-point savings outweigh the jump in subscription price. Skip Shopify Payments for a third-party gateway (PayPal, Stripe, or similar) and Shopify adds its own surcharge on top of whatever that gateway already charges you — about 2% on Basic, shrinking to roughly 0.15-0.2% on Plus — which is a real, easy-to-miss cost that this calculator's numbers assume you're avoiding by using Shopify Payments. One more line worth budgeting for separately: currency conversion. If a customer pays in a currency different from your store's, Shopify charges a conversion fee of 1.5% for US-based stores or 2% for stores based elsewhere, on top of the processing fee modeled here.

Frequently asked questions

What fees does Shopify charge on every sale?

When using Shopify Payments, there's no separate transaction fee — just a processing fee that varies by plan: 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow, 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced, and 2.15% + $0.30 on Plus. The flat $0.30 per-order fee is the same across every plan.

Why does a higher plan lower my processing fee?

Shopify's processing rate is tied to your subscription tier — merchants paying a higher monthly subscription (Grow, Advanced, Plus) get a lower per-transaction percentage in exchange. This calculator doesn't include the monthly subscription cost itself, only the per-sale processing fee, since it's a per-order calculator.

What if I use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments?

Shopify charges an additional surcharge on top of your gateway's own fees if you don't use Shopify Payments — this ranges from about 2% on Basic down to 0.15-0.2% on Plus. This calculator assumes Shopify Payments is used, which avoids that extra surcharge entirely.

Why do I need to enter shipping cost separately?

Shopify's processing fee is charged only on the selling price, not on shipping, so shipping cost here is treated purely as an expense that eats into your profit — not part of the fee calculation.

How can I improve my margin on Shopify?

Since the $0.30 flat fee is diluted more on higher-value orders, raising your average order value helps. Beyond that, moving to a higher plan tier lowers your processing percentage if your sales volume justifies the higher monthly subscription cost, and reducing shipping or product cost directly increases margin.

When does upgrading my Shopify plan actually pay for itself?

Once the processing-fee savings from a lower percentage rate outweigh the extra monthly subscription cost. Moving from Basic (2.9%) to Grow (2.7%) saves 0.2 percentage points per sale — on $10,000 of monthly sales, that's $20 saved, which needs to be weighed against Grow's higher subscription price. The math gets more favorable the higher your monthly volume, so run your own numbers at your actual sales volume rather than assuming a higher tier is automatically worth it.

What's the real cost of not using Shopify Payments?

You pay twice: your third-party gateway's own processing fee (typically comparable to or higher than Shopify Payments' rate), plus a Shopify surcharge on top — about 2% on Basic, down to roughly 0.15-0.2% on Plus. For most merchants, that stacked cost makes Shopify Payments the cheaper option outright, unless you have a specific reason (an existing merchant account, a gateway feature Shopify Payments doesn't support) to use something else.

Does currency conversion affect my margin if I sell internationally?

Yes, and it's separate from the processing fee this calculator models. When a customer pays in a currency different from your store's default, Shopify charges a currency conversion fee — 1.5% for stores based in the US, 2% for stores based elsewhere — on top of the regular processing fee. If a meaningful share of your sales come from customers paying in a foreign currency, factor this in separately since it isn't part of the plan-tier processing rate shown here.
