Marketplace Fee Matrix
Fees vary dramatically by platform — Amazon's referral fee alone ranges from 8% to 45% by category, and Etsy's Offsite Ads fee (12-15%) applies to your full order total, not just the item price, turning a $10 item with a $22.23 order into a $3.13 fee. Compare all five platforms for your own numbers below.
Compare Etsy, eBay, Amazon FBA, Poshmark, and Shopify side by side — real net payout, real total fees, real profit margin, sorted so the best platform for your numbers is obvious at a glance.

How the Marketplace Fee Matrix works
Enter your cost of goods, retail price, and shipping cost once, and this tool runs that same set of numbers through five different marketplace fee schedules at the same time — Etsy, eBay, Amazon FBA, Poshmark, and Shopify — instead of making you open five separate calculators and copy numbers between tabs. For each platform, it computes total fees, net payout (what the platform actually deposits after taking its cut), and true profit margin (what you actually keep after your own product and shipping costs too, not just the platform's cut). Results are sorted highest margin first, with the leader visually highlighted, and every number updates live as you type — no submit button, no page reload.
Who this is for
For any seller who lists — or is considering listing — the same product across more than one marketplace, and wants a real answer to "where should I actually be selling this?" rather than guessing from memory or juggling five browser tabs. It's especially useful before committing inventory to a new channel, since fee structures vary enough that a product profitable on one platform can be a loser on another once every fee is accounted for.
Worked example
Say you sell a home-goods item for $25, it costs you $10 to make or source, and $5 to ship. On Shopify (Shopify Payments, basic plan), fees are just 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.03, netting $23.98 from the platform and a true profit margin of about 35.9% after your $10 cost and $5 shipping. On Amazon FBA in the Home, Kitchen, Toys & Sports category, the 15% referral fee ($3.75) stacks with a ~$3.18 fulfillment fee and ~$0.78 in estimated monthly storage — $7.71 in total fees, a true margin of about 9.2%. Same product, same costs, a roughly 27-point swing in real profit margin depending purely on where it's listed — exactly the kind of gap a single-platform calculator can never show you.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Etsy's Offsite Ads fee hurt so much more than the '12-15%' headline number?
Because that percentage isn't charged on your item price alone — it's charged on your full order total, including shipping (and tax, where applicable). A documented real-world example: a $10 item with a $22.23 total order was charged $3.13 in Offsite Ads (15% of the $22.23 total) — that reduces the seller's margin by more than 31% of the item price, not the 15% the headline rate implies. This calculator's Etsy math applies the ad fee to (retail price + shipping cost), exactly like Etsy actually does, so the number you see here reflects that gap instead of hiding it.
Why does my actual Amazon FBA payout always come in lower than what a calculator promised?
This is one of the most common complaints in seller communities: 'the calculator says you'll net $8-10... then actual payouts hit and you're clearing $5, sometimes less.' It happens because most calculators either use one flat referral-fee percentage for every category, or quietly drop the fulfillment fee and storage fee out of the total. Amazon's referral fee genuinely ranges from 8% to 45% depending on category — there is no single correct flat rate. This tool asks for your product category and adds the referral fee, the FBA fulfillment fee, and a monthly storage-fee estimate as three separate line items, instead of collapsing Amazon down to a number that looks clean but isn't accurate.
Which platform actually keeps the most of my sale?
It depends entirely on your price point, product category, and shipping cost — that's exactly why a side-by-side comparison matters more than any single platform's calculator. The table above is sorted by 'true profit margin,' the highest-margin platform first, and that ranking can flip completely depending on your numbers: a $15 item might do best on Poshmark (below its $15 flat-fee threshold), while a $60 item in an expensive Amazon category might lose to Etsy or Shopify once referral, fulfillment, and storage fees stack up.
What does 'Estimated — select a category for accuracy' mean under Amazon's result?
It means no product category was selected, so the calculator fell back to a 15% referral-fee estimate rather than your product's real rate. Amazon doesn't have one flat fee — electronics run as low as 8%, while device accessories can run as high as 45%. Selecting your actual category from the dropdown replaces that estimate with the correct rate and clears the disclaimer.
Is this really multi-currency, or just relabeled dollars?
Both, depending on the platform and currency. Where a platform's fees are genuinely documented as different outside the US, this tool applies the real regional rate instead of just relabeling the USD figure: Etsy's payment processing runs closer to 4% in the UK/Eurozone versus 3% in the US, and Morocco-based Etsy sellers see a distinct 4.5% + MAD 5.00 processing rate plus a 2.5% currency-conversion fee (see the dedicated MAD question below for the full breakdown, including Amazon, eBay, and Shopify's genuinely different situations). Everywhere else, fees are shown as their USD figure converted into your selected currency using a static placeholder exchange-rate table, which is clearly flagged as needing a live-rate upgrade before it should be treated as financial-grade precision.
Are these fees accurate for a Morocco-based seller (MAD)?
It depends on the platform, and the honest answer differs from one to the next rather than a single yes or no. Etsy: yes — this tool applies Etsy's real Morocco-specific processing rate (4.5% + MAD 5.00 per transaction, versus 3% + $0.25 in the US) plus a 2.5% currency-conversion fee, on top of the unchanged $0.20 listing fee and 6.5% transaction fee, whenever MAD is selected. Amazon FBA and eBay: neither platform pays Moroccan sellers in MAD at all — both pay out in a major currency (USD, GBP, or EUR) via a foreign-currency receiving account (e.g. WorldFirst, Payoneer), so this tool's existing USD-based fee model is what a Morocco-based seller actually experiences on those two platforms; any MAD conversion happens later, inside that receiving account, entirely outside Amazon's or eBay's own fee schedule. Shopify: Shopify Payments — the processor this tool's Shopify math is based on — isn't available to Morocco-based merchants at all as of 2026; a real Moroccan Shopify store uses a local gateway like CMI instead, whose rate is negotiated per merchant (a researched range of roughly 1.5-2.5%, not a single fixed number), so this tool's Shopify result should be read as 'what Shopify Payments would cost if it were available to you' rather than your real Moroccan processing cost. Poshmark wasn't part of this research pass and remains unverified for Morocco.
How do I compare seller fees across platforms?
A 'marketplace fee' or 'seller fee' is whatever a platform takes out of a sale before it reaches you — and every platform structures that differently: a percentage commission, a flat per-order charge, a separate payment-processing cut, an optional listing or ad fee, or some combination of all four. That's exactly why comparing headline percentages doesn't work — 6.5% on Etsy and 13.6% on eBay aren't even charged on the same base, and Amazon has no single percentage at all (it ranges 8-45% by category before fulfillment and storage are added). A real comparison means running the same cost, price, and shipping numbers through each platform's actual formula and looking at what lands in your account after every fee — which is exactly what the tool above does: enter your numbers once and see net payout, total fees, and true profit margin for all five platforms side by side.
Which marketplace has the lowest commission rates?
There's no single answer, because the platforms in this comparison don't even charge fees the same way. Etsy combines a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and roughly 3% + $0.25 payment processing. eBay charges one all-in Final Value Fee that runs about 12.9-15% depending on category (13.6% is the commonly-cited baseline used here). Amazon has no flat rate at all — its referral fee ranges from 8% (electronics) to 45% (device accessories) before FBA fulfillment and storage fees are added on top. Poshmark charges a flat $2.95 on anything under $15, then jumps to 20% at and above that threshold. Shopify has no marketplace commission whatsoever — just payment processing (2.9% + $0.30 on the Basic plan) — but comes with a monthly subscription (starting at $39) that the other four don't charge. Because of that mix of percentage-of-price, percentage-of-total, flat, tiered, and subscription-based models, 'lowest commission' genuinely flips depending on your price point and category. Run your actual numbers through the Matrix above instead of trusting any single 'X% is cheapest' claim, including this one.
Etsy vs Shopify — which is cheaper for my product?
On a pure per-sale basis, Shopify's fee structure (2.9% + $0.30 on the Basic plan, using Shopify Payments) is structurally lower than Etsy's combined listing + transaction + payment-processing fees (6.5% + 3% + $0.20 + $0.25) at any price point — there's no threshold where Etsy's per-sale math wins outright. Using this page's own $25-item example (product cost $10, shipping $5): Shopify's fee is $1.03, netting a 35.9% true margin, while Etsy's fee is $2.83, netting a 28.7% true margin on the identical sale — over 7 points of margin, purely from fee structure. But that per-sale comparison leaves out something real: Shopify's monthly subscription (starting at $39/month on Basic) that Etsy doesn't charge at all. A seller doing only a handful of sales a month can find that monthly cost outweighs the per-sale savings, while a higher-volume seller sees the per-sale advantage compound in Shopify's favor. It also leaves out Etsy's Offsite Ads fee (12-15% of the full order total, mandatory above $10k/year in trailing sales, optional below it) — turning that on widens the gap further toward Shopify. Enter your own price, cost, and shipping into the Matrix above to see the real per-sale numbers for your product, and weigh that against Shopify's subscription cost separately, since this tool (like most per-sale calculators) doesn't fold in a monthly platform fee.
How much does Amazon FBA cost compared to eBay?
They charge fundamentally different things. eBay's Final Value Fee runs about 12.9-15% of your sale (13.6% baseline) plus a flat $0.30 per order — and that's the whole fee, since eBay doesn't handle fulfillment; you ship the item yourself. Amazon FBA charges a referral fee that ranges from 8% to 45% depending on category, then adds a separate FBA fulfillment fee and a monthly storage fee on top — Amazon does the picking, packing, and shipping, but you pay for that separately from the referral cut. On this page's $25-item example (Home, Kitchen, Toys & Sports category, $10 cost, $5 shipping): eBay's total fees are $3.70, netting a 25.2% true margin, versus Amazon FBA's $7.71 in combined referral + fulfillment + storage fees, netting 9.2% — a real gap, but one driven almost entirely by Amazon's fulfillment and storage add-ons, not the referral fee itself (15% in this category, not far off eBay's 13.6%). That gap narrows a lot in a low-referral-fee Amazon category (electronics at 8%) and widens further in a high one (device accessories at 45%) — category selection matters more for Amazon than for any other platform in this comparison. Select your real Amazon category in the tool above rather than comparing off this one example.
Do heavier or bulkier products change which platform is cheapest?
For Amazon FBA specifically, yes — its fulfillment fee is genuinely size-tiered, ranging from about $3.06-3.22 for small-standard items up to $3.86-6.75 for large-standard ones, and this tool's default ($3.18) reflects the small-standard midpoint, not a bulkier product's real fee. Amazon's storage fee also scales with cubic footage, and this tool assumes 1 cubic foot per unit as a placeholder — a genuinely large item would carry a higher real storage cost than what's shown by default. The other four platforms in this comparison (Etsy, eBay, Poshmark, Shopify) don't charge extra through their own fee formulas for a heavier or bulkier item — their commissions and processing fees are priced off your item price, not its size or weight. The real-world cost that does scale with size on every platform is what you pay to actually ship the thing, which is exactly why this tool asks for your own shipping cost as a separate input — raise that number to reflect a bulkier product's real freight cost, and, if you're comparing against Amazon FBA, treat this tool's default fulfillment fee as a small-item estimate rather than an exact figure for anything larger.
